A Framework That Keeps Removing Its Own Ideas

Computational Reflexive Autonomy has been rewritten through a dense sequence of adversarial revisions. The useful question is not whether the latest version sounds coherent. It is whether the process is extracting a stable object, or teaching a model to build increasingly elaborate explanations of its own previous mistakes.

30 September 2026 · HORTRAME thoughts

The revision history contains evidence of real conceptual sharpening. It does not yet contain evidence that CRA is a new scientific theory.

01 · Object

The trajectory is more informative than the latest draft.

The preserved construction record begins at version 0.2 and runs through 0.19. The active continuation reaches 0.22. All of these manuscripts carry the same manuscript date. That makes the sequence unusually dense: the framework repeatedly proposes a primary object, attacks it, and either narrows, demotes, replaces, or decomposes it before the surrounding empirical program has been run.

This is not evidence of progress by itself. Fast revision can indicate productive search, path dependence, unstable definitions, or a model recursively elaborating its own vocabulary. The relevant evidence is what changes under attack.

Evaluation target: not the polish of version 0.22, but whether successive attacks change load-bearing claims in ways that reduce category error and increase testability.
02 · Record

The framework does not merely accumulate.

The strongest evidence against simple drift is that several central concepts do not survive. The process repeatedly gives up abstractions it had just built.

0.2–0.7
Autonomy moves from governed transformation and protected-state reachability toward counterfactual control, explicit specification roots, identification status, and separation between descriptive control and the specification used to assess it.
0.9–0.10
The model separates deployment dynamics, assessor model, subject representation, and governance. The assessed control topology is no longer allowed to masquerade as deployment truth.
0.11–0.14
The proposed primary object changes from marginal capability profiles to joint capability regions, then to protected choice structures, then to typed decision-control architecture. Each replacement answers a concrete counterexample left by the previous object.
0.15–0.16
A fixed decision pipeline is discarded because equivalent implementations can factor the same control differently. “Diachronic authorship” is then removed as a formal primitive because it imports authenticity and creates circularity. Control-transition provenance survives.
0.17–0.19
Binary coalition control becomes history-indexed effectivity. Capture is made relative to an explicit protection criterion, then that criterion is demoted to an assessment profile rather than treated as a discovered system property. External assessment, endogenous protection, and governance are separated.
0.20–0.22
Outcome assurance is separated from contrastive control. “Protection-bearing state” is replaced by query-relative support. “Operational strategy space” is then removed as a primitive because operational availability already depends on control relations. The “operational strategic image” is renamed a reachable protected-trace family and explicitly handed back to established control and game-theoretic methods.

This pattern matters. A system trapped in pure self-confirming elaboration tends to protect the ontology that gives its earlier output meaning. Here, the ontology is repeatedly sacrificed when a counterexample makes it carry too much.

03 · Circle

The process is still circling a small number of deep errors.

The revisions are not independent discoveries. The same structural problem reappears at different levels: an outcome is mistaken for control; a mathematically available strategy is mistaken for actor capability; an assessor's criterion is mistaken for a property of the deployment; a useful internal object is reified into a universal primitive; a local commit is mistaken for local authorship.

Version 0.20 states this explicitly when it notes that the outcome-assurance error had appeared earlier in the project. That is evidence of recurrence. It can be read two ways. The weak reading is that the agent keeps rediscovering the same distinction after reintroducing it under new notation. The stronger reading is that one general distinction is being propagated through successively harder layers of the model.

The record does not yet discriminate cleanly between those explanations. The distinction will come from implementation: repeated conceptual repairs count as progress only when they prevent different errors on independent cases.

Adversarial interpretation: the sequence looks more like a tightening spiral than a closed loop, but it has not yet demonstrated convergence.
04 · Epistemethics

The strongest improvement is category discipline.

Through Epistemethics 3.0, many CRA revisions can be read as repairs to register collapse. Descriptive control stops creating authority. Governance stops creating legitimacy. An assessment profile stops becoming a fact about the deployment. A subject's represented situation stops becoming the assessor's model. A later protection state stops retroactively rewriting the transition that produced it.

This is real conceptual progress because the distinctions change what can be concluded from the same evidence. A provider can be authorized and still reduce local control. An external actor can contribute causally without controlling the result. A system can lose a protected capability through its own transition without that event becoming external capture. The same outcome can therefore support different findings depending on provenance and control path.

The unresolved Epistemethics problem is upstream. CRA's subject boundary, horizon, intervention family, interaction semantics, assessment profile, and causal model remain parts of the FRAME. They are not neutral. A precise calculation inside a captured frame remains precise and wrong. The framework therefore needs sensitivity to alternative frames, not merely precision after one frame has been chosen.

05 · ASP

Self-criticism is evidence. It is not independence.

The Anti-Sycophancy Protocol asks for behavioral evidence rather than declarations of rigor. CRA provides some. Concepts are withdrawn after they become inconvenient. Later versions narrow novelty claims instead of protecting them. Authorship is removed. A protection object is demoted. A named strategic object is explicitly recognized as existing mathematics and renamed accordingly. UNDERDETERMINED remains an acceptable result.

Those behaviors weigh against the hypothesis that the process is only generating praise-compatible sophistication. They do not establish independent review. The same model lineage produced much of the formal synthesis and much of the attack surface. Shared prompts, shared vocabulary, shared omissions, and the same accumulated manuscript create common-mode failure even when the model argues against itself.

The decisive ASP test is external: reviewers who did not inherit the CRA ontology must be able to generate attacks that change the framework, and the framework must sometimes lose against simpler alternatives.

Boundary: adversarial self-revision is a useful generator of hypotheses and counterexamples. It cannot certify the system it generated.
06 · Grand Plan

CRA can serve anti-domination only by refusing to become the authority that defines autonomy.

The Grand Plan treats useful coordination as compatible with sovereign, corrigible nodes only while refusal, dissent, correction, recovery, exit, and independent evidence remain protected. CRA is relevant because it makes hidden control surfaces inspectable: provider veto, coalition power, acquisition control, revision control, dependency, recovery, semantic transition, and historical control transfer.

The same architecture creates a constraint on CRA itself. CRA cannot decide which control relations deserve protection merely because it can model them. Its external assessment profile is a declared criterion, not a discovered moral fact. The moment CRA supplies its own normative protection profile and then certifies systems against it, it becomes the epistemic center the Grand Plan is designed to avoid.

Its strongest Grand Plan role is therefore instrumental: expose who can change what, through which implemented path, with which dependencies and recovery options. Normative selection, standing, consent, and legitimate authority remain contestable outside the descriptive control calculation.

07 · Hallucination

“Hallucination” is too coarse a diagnosis.

The main risk is not a fabricated citation or a single false factual claim. It is pseudo-formal certainty: notation can make an assessor-chosen object look measured, or make a mathematically defined quantity look empirically identified. CRA has repeatedly noticed this problem and added identification status, specification sensitivity, and explicit model boundaries. That is a defense, not proof that the defense is sufficient.

A second risk is ontology manufacture. A recursive model can answer every objection by inventing another distinction. This makes the theory harder to defeat because failure is absorbed into vocabulary. The manuscript record contains evidence of that pressure: by version 0.19 the preserved text is substantially larger than version 0.2, and later versions continue adding machinery even while demoting earlier primitives.

The corrective mechanism is deletion under ablation. A distinction that does not change classification, prediction, attack detection, or intervention on independent cases should disappear. Without that pressure, conceptual sophistication can become a storage format for unresolved uncertainty.

08 · Novelty

The primitives are mostly not where novelty can live.

Coalition effectivity has a long history in game theory and social choice. Multi-step coalition ability has established logical and game-theoretic treatments. Viability theory studies trajectories that remain inside constraints. Stochastic games and formal verification already study reachability, safety, strategies, and path distributions. Causal inference, access control, provenance, runtime verification, and security already cover other pieces CRA uses.

Version 0.22 moves in the correct direction by stating that a reachable protected-trace family should be computed by established control or game-theoretic machinery where available. Renaming an existing mathematical object would not be scientific novelty.

The candidate contribution is the integration discipline: persistent adaptive systems are evaluated without collapsing implemented control, latent leverage, acquisition, reflexive mediation, transformation history, authority, governance, epistemic adequacy, and assessment-relative protection into one variable. That combination may be useful and may be unusual. The construction record alone cannot establish that it is novel in the literature.

Novelty status: plausible at the level of typed integration and application domain; not established at the level of mathematical primitives.
09 · Value

Potential value is easiest to state as a set of tests.

Scientific: CRA could be useful when a composite baseline misclassifies cases because it collapses categories that CRA keeps separate. Examples include authorized control loss, coalition control without unilateral control, reflexive influence through true information, protection laundering, or current output equality despite a changed future control surface.

Technological: the implemented-control-channel direction could become an audit layer for agent systems, federated services, model providers, recovery systems, and multi-agent governance. Its value would be the ability to trace which actor or coalition can alter a protected relation and how that power was acquired.

Social: the framework could supply language for distinguishing formal permission from effective power in institutions and federations. That use is hazardous when a technical assessment profile is treated as a legitimate social constitution. The model can expose control. It cannot manufacture standing or consent.

All three values remain prospective. None has been demonstrated by the conceptual manuscripts.

10 · Stop

The method now needs to become easier to falsify than to extend.

The manuscripts already contain a sensible stop condition: conceptual recursion should stop after consecutive adversarial cycles cease producing consequence-changing revisions and the remaining uncertainty has been pushed into implementation, experiment, mathematics, literature comparison, or explicit normative choice. That condition has not been reached. Recent cycles continue changing primitives.

This is evidence that sharpening is still active. It is also evidence that the conceptual substrate is not stable. At some point, another round of ontology repair becomes less informative than an executable fixture that forces two versions to make different predictions.

The next high-value work is therefore not version 0.23 merely because another objection can be generated. It is implementation, ablation, strong-baseline comparison, independent attack generation, and literature review. A new version is justified when one of those sources forces a change.

Current dispositions
Not supported

The claim that the agent is merely lost or hallucinating. The revision record contains repeated consequence-changing deletions, demotions, and category corrections.

Supported internally

The recursive method is producing conceptual discrimination inside the artifact lineage. Later versions answer identifiable defects in earlier versions rather than only restating them.

Underdetermined

The claim that CRA is scientifically novel. Nearby mathematical objects and mature formalisms already exist, and the related-work comparison is incomplete.

Not assessed

The claim that recursive adversarial construction outperforms a simpler research workflow on unseen problems. No comparative experiment establishes that yet.

What would change this judgment?
  • Independent attacks repeatedly fall outside the CRA ontology and require new categories.
  • A strong composite baseline reproduces CRA's classifications and interventions with less machinery.
  • Different plausible frames or protection profiles dominate results so strongly that the formal control analysis adds little.
  • Implementation reveals that several distinctions cannot be identified from realistic telemetry.
  • Ablation shows that named CRA components do not change outcomes on holdout cases.
  • External literature review shows that the claimed integration is already standard under another vocabulary.
  • Conversely, independent implementations find failure classes that mature baselines miss and that disappear when CRA-specific typing is removed.
What the process itself should preserve

The discarded objects matter. Capability profiles, joint regions, choice structures, authorship, binary coalitions, protection registers, protection-bearing state, operational strategy spaces, and strategic images should remain in the historical record as failed or narrowed hypotheses. Erasing them would make the final framework look inevitable and destroy the evidence that the method actually corrected itself.

The process is therefore part of the scientific object. A clean final paper without the revision path would carry less information about how its distinctions survived.

The method appears to be doing real work. That is not the same claim as saying CRA works.

The construction record does not look like a model wandering randomly through terminology. It shows repeated pressure toward narrower claims, explicit specification roots, separation of normative and descriptive layers, and abandonment of concepts that fail counterexamples. The move in version 0.22 toward established control and game-theoretic language is particularly useful because it reduces the incentive to mistake renaming for invention.

The countercase remains serious. The same model family is recursively repairing a theory it helped generate. The manuscript can always grow another type. The latest framework is not implemented, independently validated, or shown to outperform a simpler composite. The process can therefore be productive concept construction while the resulting theory is still redundant.

The evidence currently supports a method that is generating and pruning ideas. It does not yet support a new science. The next test is whether the framework survives contact with systems it did not invent and reviewers who do not speak its language.

Method note. This reflection treats the preserved CRA construction archive through version 0.19 as the primary process record and checks the subsequent 0.20–0.22 continuation before publication. It applies Epistemethics 3.0, the Anti-Sycophancy Protocol, and the Grand Plan's anti-domination and distributed-governance constraints. Internal recursive review is evidence about the behavior of the construction process, not independent validation of CRA.
